Born c.1834, Joseph J. Yates enlisted in the 62nd N.Y.S.V. on the 17th April, 1861 at New York, aged of
27. Originally enlisted as the regiment's Adjutant, he was soon assigned as Regimental Quartermaster. He recieved his commission
on the 3rd July, 1861. Joseph J. Yates was discharged from the Army on the 27th July, 1862.
