Well-Known Mineral
Collector Was Civil War Veteran. James
Walker, Civil War
veteran and a well-known collector of minerals, died in a Brooklyn hospital, on
Wednesday after a long illness. He was 91 years of age and had resided at 731
Lexington Avenue, Brooklyn. A
native of Ireland. Mr.
Walker came to this country when a child and served in the war with the
Anderson Zouaves, in the Sixty-second New York Volunteers; He was one of the
few surviving members of Grant Post, 321, G. A. R. After the war he became connected
with the experimental department of the Seth Thomas Clock Company, remaining
with that concern for fifty-two years. He had collected a large and valuable
horological library which he later presented to the company. Mr.
Walker was a former
treasurer of the New York Microscopical Society and a member of the Brooklyn
Mineralogical Club. About three years ago he donated his mineraligal collection
to the Mineralogy Division of the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. Unknown Publication Anderson Zouaves
